Meet the Family Behind Red Earth Roses, Mt Evelyn
Hi, I'm Dale. Red Earth Roses has been going for 10 years here in Mount Evelyn, though the growing goes back a lot further than that. I've been growing flowers myself for 25 years, and I'm the third generation in my family to do it, following my grandfather and my dad before me.
My grandfather was one of the pioneers of flower growing in this area. My dad built on that and specialised in roses, ending up with one of the biggest rose farms around at the time. When it came to naming my own farm, I looked at what makes this place different: the red soil you find all through the Mount Evelyn hills. Red Earth Roses.

Roses are technical to grow well and keep consistent. That's not a complaint; it's actually why I keep doing it. There's real science in getting a rose from bud to bloom to vase, and after 25 years, I still find that satisfying. More than half the flowers sold in Australia today are imported, so growing them here in Mt Evelyn is as much a choice as it is a craft.
What I love most isn't only the growing, though. It's understanding what customers actually need, especially around big pressure moments like Valentine's Day, when timing and reliability matter just as much as the flowers.

We grow across 6,000m2 of undercover space in the foothills of the Yarra and Wandin valleys, using greenhouse conditions and seasonal growing from October through to May.
Everything is grown locally using sustainable methods, which means fresher roses for you and a much smaller footprint than flowers flown or trucked in from overseas.
